A Full Review of HBO GO for Android
I’ve tried to fight reviewing this app, as it’s been done to death in the short time it’s been on the market. I’ve never had an app on my phone that I’ve used more than the HBO GO App; if you have the service and still haven’t’ picked the app up yet, you’re really missing out. My love affair with HBO started in the 80s when they had Fraggle Rock, and as my teens hit I moved on to great shows like “Dream On”, and “The Larry Sanders Show.” Nickelodeon took a chunk out of my life for awhile with their early 90s hits, but then I was back to HBO with The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Wire, and Deadwood. All those shows are gone now, but HBO still continues to put out some awesome shows. I’ve recently added two more of their shows to my all-time favorites list with Eastbound & Down, and Game of Thrones. Thanks to the HBO GO app, I can now watch almost any show I want, whenever I want… can you say awesome??
The setup is a breeze just fire up the app, sign in under your cable provider, and you’ll be watching flicks in no time. Now for the content… as I was writing this review I checked the app and they have well over 200 movies available right now that you can watch. They aren’t junk movies either; you’ll get some great newer movies like Repo Man, Get him to the Greek, and Clash of the Titans; as well as great older stuff like Rush, The Sleep Dealer, Solaris (yes I actually liked it), and Twelve Monkeys!
Everything is broken down in categories as well; they have movies, series, comedy, sports, documentaries, and “Late Night” sections. The comedy and documentary sections are my favorite; they have stand-up from Bob Sagat as well some really great documentaries. The sports section gives you boxing & the real sports series, and we all know what the late night section holds lol. It’s funny that I can’t get half of this stuff through my digital cable box, but I can get it all through the app via my phone or laptop. I’m definitely not going to complain though, they’ve really got some great movies on the app and it’s saved me from making a trip to Redbox more than once.
Next up we have my favorite section… HBO series. I love this section as it has some HBO original series that I haven’t seen in years and a lot of them aren’t available through your cable provider via the TV, you can just watch them through the app. Some of the great older series they have up are Carnival, Band of Brothers, Deadwood, OZ, Rome, The Pacific, Six Feet Under, Sopranos, Def Comedy Jam (awesome lol), and The Wire. Out of all of those only Sopranos, Deadwood and Six Feet Under are available normally, the rest you can only see with HBO GO; now that’s what I call exclusive content.
They also have all the new stuff like True Blood, Eastbound and Down, Treme, Hung, Entourage, Curb your Enthusiasm, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, and the recently departed favorite of mine Big Love. What makes all this better is the fact that they have ALL the episodes up, not just 3 or 4 per series; they have all the episodes for every season of anything they have up. I may have missed a few things, but from what I checked that was the case… Big Love – every episode, all 5 seasons, same for Sopranos, Deadwood, Curb, etc… You really can’t beat that folks.
As I said when I started this article, in my opinion this is one of the best app you can have; if you have HBO. If not, it’s almost worth subscribing just to have access to the app! They literally have that much content up, and they have thrown a few surprises in early in the game like the episode of Game of Thrones they gave to us HBO GO users a week before everybody else, very nice! I don’t have the best Internet connection in the world, but I watched vids on my phone for hours using my Wi-Fi and it hardly ever stalled. Video quality was perfect, and the audio was spot on as well. I really can’t say anything bad about this app at all, but I would kill to see some old episodes of “Tales from the Crypt,” or even “Dream On” if anyone even remembers those shows. This app looks great, is easy to use, and it’s full of great movies and shows! If for some reason you subscribe and haven’t picked up this great app yet, you can go grab it in the Android Market for free.
