Is HTC Creating The Nexus 3 That Will Run Ice Cream Sandwich?

It’s pretty safe to say the original Google Nexus Smartphone was a success, as it featured top-of-the-line hardware as well as software (at the time of its launch). It’s also safe to say that the successor — the Google Nexus S — was also a success on Sprint and T-Mobile as it features Gingerbread, a 4 inch Super AMOLED Display, a front and rear facing camera, NFC support, and 4G for the Sprint version. With those two statements in mind, it is no surprise to hear that Google is possibly working on a third rendition of the Nexus series for launch sometime later this year.

Manufactured by HTC, the Nexus 3 seems to lack the four capacitive touch buttons on the bottom the screen characteristic of all the Android smartphones. The main theme of Ice Cream Sandwich (the upcoming Android OS after Gingerbread) is to integrate the tablet experience of Honeycomb into the smartphone platform. Since Honeycomb tablets lack the four capacitive touch buttons, it’s not a surprise that Google wants to use the same approach to smartphones.

Lastly, it is said to be used in testing with T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network as well as Sprint’s CDMA network, therefore the new Nexus 3 should work with T-Mobile and Sprint’s 4G network. Of course, the Nexus 3 is currently a rumor, and the image above is only a purported prototype of the device. Hopefully, we will hear more rumors in the future regarding specs and release dates if this turns about to be the real deal.

About the Author

Currently, I live in the United States in the crowded, but enjoyable state of New Jersey. I first began blogging about technology in 2007, right on the precipice of the smartphone, netbook, and GPS boom. Not to mention Facebook and Twitter have started to become increasingly popular during this time period. In terms of Google Android, I have been privileged to test and review many different devices and among my favorites are the Samsung Epic 4G and the HTC Droid Incredible.
