Panasonic Announces New Eluga Smartphone, Puts Emphasis On Style

Panasonic has never truly been at the forefront of innovation in the smartphone industry. However, hoping to turn things around and become competitive with the likes of HTC and Samsung, they recently announced the ELUGA smartphone and made its debut on the first day of MWC 2012. Clearly, Panasonic has decided to favor style over substance for this handset as can be seen from the pictures (available at the source).

On paper, it has decent specs to boot: a 1Ghz dual-core TI OMAP4430 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 4.3 inch qHD screen and 8GB on internal storage. However, initial reactions towards the performance of the phone have been less than impressive, with the phone being unable to handle even basic tasks like scrolling through homescreen and switching between apps. Whether this is due to a hardware acceleration problem or the inability of the processor to handle the heavily skinned version of Android 2.3.5, this phone will not be able to hold its own in the competitive smartphone market until these problems are resolved. The disappointing 1,150mAh battery doesn’t help matters either. Panasonic clearly has some work to do before they can start hoping to sell the ELUGA alongside the other mid-range smartphones available today.

About the Author

Currently, I live in the United States in the crowded, but enjoyable state of New Jersey. I first began blogging about technology in 2007, right on the precipice of the smartphone, netbook, and GPS boom. Not to mention Facebook and Twitter have started to become increasingly popular during this time period. In terms of Google Android, I have been privileged to test and review many different devices and among my favorites are the Samsung Epic 4G and the HTC Droid Incredible.
