Prepaid Cards being discontinued on Google Wallet
Google have announced that they will soon be discontinuing their Prepaid Card program. Before the latest Google Wallet update was released, only prepaid cards could be used with the Android app, or Citi Mastercards. Now that all debit and credit cards can be used with the app however prepaid cards have become rather obsolete.
After Monday September 17th, you will not be able to add funds to your Prepaid Card, nor will you be able to add a new Prepaid Card to your Google Wallet account. A month later, October 17th the Prepaid Cards will then be removed altogether from the app. If however you have funds left on your Google Prepaid Card, then you will be able to get a refund by sending a request in to Google.
If you have a Google Prepaid Card on your account but, are unsure as to whether you have any funds on it, you can find out within the app by going to ‘payment cards’ and find the one labelled “Google Prepaid Card”. If you have more than one card on your account now you are able to add your own debit or credit card, ensure the prepaid card is selected so that you use any balance left on it, or make a note of how much you do have so you can request your refund.
Additionally, Google have announced that the use of Google Wallet comes with new terms and conditions. Previously if you did not use the app for transactions within a period of 180 days, you would then be charged a monthly fee of $2. Now the fee is applied after only 30 days of inactivity, with any credit on the Prepaid Card being used first.
