Angry Birds Rio the Review

Overview

The game a lot of us have been waiting for came out early this morning in the form of “Angry Birds Rio.”  Its available exclusively through Amazons brand new App store which also opened this morning.  Personally, I’m  a huge Angry Birds fan, I’ll admit it. I was really excited to get over to the new marketplace and snatch this up.  After installing the new marketplace and loading the game up, it was time for some action.  Was it worth the wait….yes it was.

Gameplay

If you’re familiar with the Angry Birds series, game play in Rio is exactly the same. If your not familiar with the series, you load birds into a slingshot and “shoot” them towards your goals.  Your goal in Rio is to free the caged birds.  I will have to admit I miss the piggy’s so far. The first level is a warehouse and personally, it didn’t seem quite as hard as the previous game, but it was really different. It’s an inside level for one, and your shooting at caged birds instead of those evil pigs. By the time I got to the second level and had seen the monkeys, I forgot all about the pigs.

Features

The games graphics seem improved, and I also noticed a few new things.  There are inner tubes in the first level of the game, where there were “bumpers” in the previous version.  They also threw some chains into the first level.  The chains hold things up, and while the yellow and red birds go right through them, the blue bird does not. There are also Pineapples that you collect instead of eggs (I assume), I got two in the first levels and they were added to my trophies. The levels are laid out by month, with the first two being “Smugglers’ Den” and “Jungle Escape.” The rest are untitled and are just named May, July, October, November. I assume there will be new levels added on in those months.

Verdict

It’s a welcome addition to the Angry Birds family.  To me the game was very different from the first, while still staying true to the series.  The monkeys really cracked me up in the Jungle levels and I can’t wait to sit down and dig into this game a little further.  Graphics seemed to improve somewhat, while the game play was smooth, with no issues on my Captivate.  If you’re a fan of the series, your going to want to get this, and can do so “only” in the new Amazon Market. It is free for today on Amazon, after that it will set you back 99 cents. You will have to install Amazons App market before you can download the game. Either way it’s well worth the download, go grab this today if you can.
