Formula 1 Android App released
If you are a fan of Formula 1 racing, there is now an app to fill your needs. The official Formula1.com 2011 app was released today in the Android Market, just before the new season begins. It will help you keep track of the races and your favorite drivers over the course of the season. There is not a lot to look at graphically , but it has most of the features you will want for race day. Let’s take a look and see what it does, and doesn’t do…
The first thing you’re going to have to do is register. I know a lot of people hate doing that, and some users have reported trouble with the registration from their phones. I was hoping this would be a quick registration, but it does take you to the webpage where you have to fill out more info. After a few minutes of filling out information and confirming, I was finally ready to go. The “select your country from a top20” list was amusing at least.
From the main screen of the app you have several tabs such as Live Timing, Races and Standing. The main home screen has a list of countries, showing the upcoming races for each country, as well as the start times. You can check the start times by your local time, or the countries local time. The “live timing” tab is empty as there is nothing going on at the moment, and the “Races” tab is pretty much a repeat of the Home screen. It is just laid out differently, but all the same information is there. The Standings Tab shows the current standings of the Drivers, as well as the Constructors. There are several other features that will be active on race day like weather conditions, lap time and text commentary.
Not bad, but it could use some work. The app did bog down a bit on my Captivate, and while it looks nice, it does seem a little rushed. It does have a lot of the features F1 fans will want, although I did notice there was not a news section. The real test of the application will be over the weekend when the first race of the season begins in Australia. If you are a Formula 1 fan, you may want to go ahead and download this to be ready for the first race. You can head on over to the Market and pick it up for free.
