MOMA – Museum of Modern Art Android App Review

Today I decided to check out the Android app called MOMA. It’s the official app put out by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Trying to take on a task this big could not have been easy and while it isn’t bad, there are some areas that need improvement. The MOMA app lets you browse through collections, send snapshots, get information on current exhibits, and take multimedia tours. Whew, it does a lot, but lets see what it does well.

The app has a great style starting with the main screen and going through all the individual sections. The Exhibitions section is nice especially for anyone planning a trip to the museum. It shows all the current and upcoming events for the year so you can plan ahead.

The real heart of the app lies in the “Artists” section of the menu. From there you can browse through artists by name, check out the collections, or see what is currently on view at the museum. On the individual artist pages, you can see their work as well as their bio.  It seems geared towards teaching people about art history as much as showing the art and works well on that level.

Now let me tell you what didn’t work. I could not get the tour or playlist features to work properly. The app crashed or sat there until I had to back out. The other big problem I noticed was the fact that the search box in the Artists section did not work for me, and they are missing some of the listed artists information. Its free to download in the market, if you love art you may want to check MOMA out. I think this will be an outstanding app once the developers can get the kinks worked out.
