Sprint Confirms Android 2.2 on EVO 4G, Denies It On Moment and Hero
Today Sprint officially confirmed the HTC EVO 4G will be receiving Android 2.2 sometime in the near future. Naturally, the Sprint customers who own an HTC EVO 4G smartphone were very pleased with the news, even though Sprint was annoyingly vague about a timeframe for the Froyo update. Other Sprint customers who own the Samsung Moment or the HTC Hero were under the assumption they too will be receiving the Android 2.2 update when it is ready to go. The original message on the Sprint Community website read:
As work on finalizing the software is under way, Sprint expects to launch Android 2.2 in the near future.
With the Android 2.2 upgrade, customers can expect improvements to include the following benefits: updates to user interface, improved EAS Support, improved browser performance, including Flash 10x Support, voice dialing over Bluetooth and application storage on external memory.
Now it reads:

Sorry for any confusion created when we initially made this announcement. HTC EVO 4G will receive the 2.2 update, Samsung Moment and HTC Hero will not. Future devices launching with 2.1 also will be updated to 2.2

If I am a Samsung Moment or HTC Hero owner, I’m pissed off at Sprint because my phone isn’t old at all and should be deserving of the Android 2.2 update. I guess the only comfort in this announcement is that every phone with Android 2.1 from here on out will be upgraded to Android 2.2.

What is needed is something in each carriers T+C’s about minimum duration of full support (meaning rom updates). Google should start enforcing this if carriers want to use their branding.
Meanwhile – never buy an Android handset that doesn’t isn’t rooted and doesn’t have an active rom community. It’s your only protection against being shafted by the carriers.
