Will Android 2.4 Launch This Summer?

According to a report by Pocket-Lint, Google’s next iteration of Android — Android 2.4 — could launch as soon as this summer. Specifically, June or July is being reported as possible launch months as an official announcement could take place in May at Google’s I/O conference.

Rumors of Android 2.4, also known as Ice Cream, began swirling when the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc was running an unannounced version of Android 2.4. Sony Ericsson claimed it was a software malfunction, but Android 2.4 makes sense since Android 3.0 is being targeted as a tablet-only OS. In terms of naming, we already have Android Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, so Ice Cream fits right along the pattern of alphabetical names.

Pocket-Lint’s sources refused to be named, but the sources must have enough credence for the blog to go ahead and publish such information. Personally, it’s nice to see Google working on the next version of Android so soon after launching Android 2.3 and even Android 3.0, but in all seriousness, let’s get Android 2.3 on the majority of smartphones first before worrying about Ice Cream.

About the Author

Currently, I live in the United States in the crowded, but enjoyable state of New Jersey. I first began blogging about technology in 2007, right on the precipice of the smartphone, netbook, and GPS boom. Not to mention Facebook and Twitter have started to become increasingly popular during this time period. In terms of Google Android, I have been privileged to test and review many different devices and among my favorites are the Samsung Epic 4G and the HTC Droid Incredible.
