As Expected Verizon Official Announces the Motorola Droid R2-D2, Available on September 30!

by On September 27, 2010

So the dummy units of the special edition Motorola Droid R2-D2 that started shipping to Verizon stores last week were really in preparation for the release of the actual Droid 2 R2-D2 smartphone. Yes, Verizon has just made this official by way of a press release announcing the availability of this smartphone that will definitely tickle the fancies of many Star Wars fans. The force will be with you on September 30 if you visit Verizon stores or check out Verizon online. The release of the Motorola Droid R2-D2 is in commemoration of the 30th year since the first Star Wars movie was shown. The smartphone looks like the Astromech Droid from the Star Wars saga and will be packed in a custom box that looks like a carbonite. It will also come with a Star Wars media dock and wired stereo headset and loaded with exclusive Star Wars content such as R2-D2 notification sounds and ringtones, four live wallpapers, R2-D2 Clock Widget, “The Best of R2-D2″ video with the original Cantina music, and exclusive Binoculars App. These features are certainly enough to rock every Star Wars fans wit out. It is making me excited right now and how I wish I could grab this phone as soon as it hits Verizon’s stores. Unfortunately I can’t and the thought is making me sad. Even making me and perhaps everyone else who are not under Verizon contract is the fact that Verizon is also releasing a Star Wars mobile app for Android 2.1 phones under Verizon. The Empire Strikes Back Android app will let you browse, preview and download Star Wars content related to Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back plus some other cool features such as Bounty Hunt Visual ID, sound and photo gallery,  live wallpapers, trivia challenge, and widgets. So there. If you’re a Verizon customer,  the Droid R2-D2 will be available for $249 after a $100 mail-in rebate under a two-year contract from Verizon.  More details and specs can be found from the Droid 2 R2-D2 official site. Check it out and be treated with a cool Star Wars intro.
