DigiTimes: Samsung may experience in-house chipset supply shortage in 2013

Due to projected high demand for upcoming Samsung products, the company may experience a chipset supply shortage in 2013. That’s according to a report by DigiTimes, which anticipates Samsung’s in-house production of chips like Exynos will be unable to meet keep up with global orders.

That isn’t the only setback Samsung’s suffered as a result its products’ blockbuster sales. We told you in April that the company was forced to begin purchasing DRAM from rival SK Hynix to keep up with demand, and China Post reports that Samsung will prioritize production of Galaxy devices this month by cutting supplies of DRAM and NAND Flash modules to Taiwan and China.

While these supply shortages may seem cause for alarm, it’s important to remember the kind of weight Samsung can throw around the chip fabricator industry. The company is the world’s largest producer of computer memory chips, and regularly posts billion-dollar earnings. It’s highly unlikely recent disruptions in the chip supply chain will cause major manufacturing delays for Samsung, and probable the shortages won’t go on for long.
