George Lucas sells Star Wars to Disney, New Movies & Games are on the Way

by On October 31, 2012

Normally we don’t report on things outside the world of Android, but this one’s a doozy and I’m a Star Wars nut. As you may have heard Disney bought out George Lucas yesterday to the tune of 4 billion dollars. That’s the same amount the paid for Marvel not long ago, and now Disney basically owns your childhood and the childhoods of your unborn children. I would have had this up last night as I heard the news when it was announced, but news this big takes a while to sink in especially when you’re a fan. By now you’re probably wondering what this has to do with the Android platform. Well Disney has put out some awesome games including the insanely popular Where’s My Water? and Pirates of the Caribbean. Now that Disney owns ALL of George Lucas’s stuff that means we’ll likely see ‘official’ Star Wars Android Games and maybe even some Indiana Jones. It’s okay… you can breathe now. This part of the deal is a good thing as who wouldn’t want to have lots of sick Star Wars games on their mobile. This also means we “may” get to see some LucasArts classics brought to mobile devices like Maniac Mansion, The Secret of Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, and my personal favorite Star Wars: Yoda Stories. That’s really just scratching the surface of things as far as gaming goes, and I for one am totally excited. Nothing has been announced yet, but I’m betting we’ll hear something before years end as the new Star Wars movie is just 2 years away now. The possibilities are virtually endless when you really think about it as the Star Wars universe is huge and there are a lot of different ways you could go with things without stepping on hardcore fans toes. As a true fan the main thing I’d like to see is the ORIGINAL films on Blu-Ray uncut and just like they were originally shown. If Disney does that they will win over every Star Wars fan on the planet with a quickness as that’s something we’ve all longed to own.  I respect George’s vision and understood what he was trying to do, but it would be awesome to put the “Han Shot First” argument to rest once and for all. Blu-Ray’s aside, I’m still in shock that we’re getting 3 new flicks and a live action TV series, it’s truly unbelievable. As a lifelong Star Wars fan I’ll admit yesterday’s news was more than a little shocking and a little fanboy part of me died when I heard that Disney owns Star Wars and Indy.  That being said, Lucas new it was time I think and honestly Disney is the best choice if you have to sell… just look at what they did with the Avengers.  My sadness subsided a bit when it sunk in that we’re getting a brand spankin’ new Star Wars movie in 2015 (first of three) and George Lucas will only be a consultant going forward. This means we might get someone like Christopher Nolan or Steven Spielberg at the helm of the new Star Wars movie. Can you say WOW? I honestly think that Disney will handle the franchises properly as you don’t want to piss off millions of Star Wars fans that love to buy products, and again just look what they’ve done for Marvel and the Avengers. I sincerely hope that George Lucas doesn’t just retire, it would be great to see him direct a few more movies as I feel we never got to truly see what the man could do outside of that universe we all know and love. Close to 40 years ago he brought us THX 1138 and American Graffiti which were the last movies he directed before the juggernaut known as Star Wars, and I’d love to see him take a crack at something else. In closing I’d just like to say thank you George… Thank you for bringing us all those wonderful childhood memories and thank you for turning things over so countless generations to come will be able to enjoy Star Wars and Indy long after we’re gone.
