Huawei Set to Dethrone Apple in 2018
Huawei is a Chinese state-owned telecom-manufacturer, a multinational company which is set to overtake Apple this year. If you’re wondering what is this about, check this out: Huawei already shipped 100,000,000 smartphones so far, as of July 18th respectively, and by the end of the current year, China’s leading smartphone manufacturer, which is currently world’s 3rd largest, behind Apple and Samsung, is looking to ship 100 million more.More precisely, Huawei looks to become world’s 2nd largest smartphone manufacturer/vendor after Samsung, thus dethroning Apple, by selling no less than 200 million units to both global and domestic markets in 2018.
Huawei Technologies managed to maintain its fast growth momentum this year, despite a global slowdown in smartphone shipments in 2018. Here’s the company’s mobile segment boss Richard Yu Chengdong during a new smartphone launch on Wednesday:
“Previously Huawei reached the 100 million shipments mark on December 22, 2015, October 14, 2016 and September 12, 2017. As it’s only taken just over six months to reach the target this year, we are now aiming for shipments of 200 million units by the end of 2018,”
The company counts its global mobile sales figures by combining both Honor and Huawei branded smarpthones. It’s interesting to observe that world’s top 2 brands Apple and Samsung have reported a slowdown in shipments as per 2018,a decline of 2.8% and 2.4 % respectively. Huawei’s marketing strategy was to focus on its India sales, which makes for the world’s biggest emerging market after China, of course. In case you didn’t know, Honor is the company’s budget brand, yet both Huawei and Honor smartphones were selling like fresh baked bread in India in the second quarter of 2018. According to a senior industry analyst:
“Given that the second half is normally the peak season for smartphone sales as major brands will all release their flagship phones, it will not be difficult for Huawei to exceed 200 million units of phone shipments if it has already completed half of that now”
It’s important to mention that Huawei will launch its Mate series, the next-gen flagship that is, in the 3rd quarter of 2018. Last year, Huawei managed to ship 151,3 million smartphones globally, compared to Apple’s 215,8 million. Samsung dominated the global market authoritatively, with 317,3 million units sold in 2017. Overtaking Apple as world’s second-largest smartphone manufactured has been Huawei’s target for a long time, but now their goal is within reach. And that’s nothing short of amazing, considering that Huawei was a quasi-anonymous smartphone vendor until 2013, when their P-series started to become popular. What would the next 5 years bring us?
