LG Will Build Flexible Displays in 2013

by On June 20, 2013

flexible displays Yeah, you got that right, LG is currently developing flexible displays this year and it is expected that the first smart phones with flexible displays will be released before the end of 2013. This announcement was made today by a company spokesman interviewed by Korea Times. According to Frank Lee,  the person who gave the interview, LG is currently working on its first device featuring a flexible display and it is expected that at the end of Q4 of 2013 mass production will begin. The idea of a flexible display is not that new, if memory serves Philips was talking about that stuff some years ago, back in 2005 even, so this is hardly breaking news. What is new is the fact that LG(who used to have its LCD panel factory in a joint venture with Philips) officially announced that they are committed to manufacture them for mass production very soon, and that’s cool. LG even presented one of its flexible panels last month, a 5 inches wide OLED display, with full HD resolution and also they released the first curved OLED TV display in the world. They are in a bitter rivalry with Samsung in this field of producing displays for smart devices and TV sets. Samsung themselves are working on a flexible display for smart phones, and they too presented one of their prototypes at CES 2013. Today’s announcement contradicts what LG’s Vice President for Europe said recently, that the technology is not mature yet and we will have to wait quite a bit to see flexible displays on our gadgets. LG plans to manufacture flexible displays and sell them to everyone interested. The production will begin at LG’s E2 line in the Paju industrial complex, according to Mr. Frank Lee, and LG will use, let me quote him on that : “4.5th generation glass-cutting technology for the OLED flexible displays.”   I really don’t know what that means, but it sounds interesting. I can’t wait to put my hands on a flexible smartphone, imagine the possibilities! Source : Korea Times
