There were several rumors floating around in the past week or so that Motorola would not upgrade rooted Xoom’s to 4G LTE when the upgrade becomes available. Thankfully Matt, the Motorola Forum Manager, cleared the air about rooted devices. His full message can be read below, but essentially, he said Motorola Xoom owners with rooted devices need to relock their Xoom first and make sure it has all the original factory apps installed. Doing so will help make the upgrade process to install the LTE radio a lot smoother. Even though it may be a pain having to re-root the device after you get it back, but hey, it’s worth receiving a LTE radio.
Rooting the Xoom – will this make it ineligible for 4G upgrade? Hey hey! Check it out. All Motorola XOOM tablets on the Verizon Wireless network are eligible to receive an upgrade to support 4G LTE. This includes those that have been unlocked; however, those units must be submitted for upgrade with the original factory software reinstalled and the device relocked in order to receive the upgrade. For devices that are returned unlocked, Motorola will attempt to complete the upgrade, but may be unable to update the software. In these cases, the device will be returned to the consumer with just the 4G LTE modem installed. More details on the process will be available closer to the upgrade availability.
