Skype Android App Released into the Wild, Wi-Fi VoiP Only for US

by On October 5, 2010

Today, Skype fans especially those who own an Android phone are rejoicing. Skype has just made its Android available in the Android Market. Like it’s iOS and Symbian siblings, Skype for Android brings in VoiP calls either through Wi-Fi and/or 3G. When it comes to features, Skype for Android pretty much carries the same features as the Skype app in both iOS and Symbian platforms. You can make free Skype-to-Skype calls over Wi-Fi or mobile data connection – GPRS, EDGE, 3G. That’s anywhere in the world except for China and Japan. Additionally, for our friends in the U.S. you will have to contend with using Skype on your Android phone through Wi-Fi. At any rate you’d still get the chance to make low rate Skype calls to landline or mobile phones, send and receive instant messages to one or a group of friends on Skype, synchronize contacts between Skype, see when contacts are online, import names and number to the Skype Android app and receive calls on your Skype online number. Finally, Skype for Android were tested to work well on Android phones running OS v2.1 and 2.2. Specific handsets include HTC Desire, HTC Legend, Nexus One and more.
