Top 10 Android Apps of the Week – October 7, 2012

by On October 7, 2012

It’s Sunday which means it’s time for another edition of our picks for The Top 10 Android Apps of the Week. This weeks offerings let you manage your finances, hit the gridiron, change your eye color, and view images from another planet. There’s a little something for everyone so without further ado we proudly present our Top 10 Android Apps of the Week.

1. Mars Rover Curiosity

In case you’ve been living under a rock over the past year we recently landed a rover on Mars. If you’re as curious about what’s going on up there then the mars Rover Curiosity app is a great way to stay in the loops as you’ll be able to see the latest images from the red planet. The app works great, and it’s free to download as well.

2. Quicken Money Management

The folks at Intuit released the Quicken Money Management app for Android this week and it’s pretty handy to have if you use the desktop software. The Quicken Money app allows you to synch your desktop and mobile data, view transactions and balances, and get alerts so you can stay up to date on any changes with your account. It’s a free app and a must-have if you use the desktop version of Quicken.

3. Floor Plan Creator

The Floor Plan Creator lets you easily create and share your floor plans and comes with quite a few cool features to boot. You can use predefined room shapes or draw them from scratch, use common furniture elements, and it’s got a cool augmented reality room capture feature as well. If you’re in the market for a floor plan app this is a great one to get and it’s free to download on Google Play.

4. AppDJ

AppDJ is another in a long line of Android App ‘discovery’ apps which lets you find apps and games that are to your liking. You can define traits of the kind of app your looking for and AppDj takes care of the rest. It’s definitely an interesting way to go about things and if you want to give it a go you can pick it up for free.

5. Showtime Anytime

If you’re a Showtime subscriber the Showtime Anytime app will let you catch up on your favorite Showtime shows while you’re on the go. You’ll not only have access to shows like Dexter & Homeland, but you’ll also be able to access a wide variety of Showtime movies & specials as well. The app is free but unfortunately it’s only works for people with U-Verse or FiOS.

6. NFL TNF Xtra

If you’re a football fan like me you don’t want to miss a game or a score. The NFL TNF Xtra app lets you step up and get live info on the Thursday night NFL games while also allowing you to get into the game with the Trivia Challenge and several other cool features.  I did have a few force closes with the app (along with other folks) last week, but hopefully the NFL will get things straightened out promptly.

7. Eye Color Studio

Ever want to turn your brown eyes blue? If so then the Eye Color Studio is just the thing for you as it gives you the ability to simulate hundreds of eye colors realistically on any photo you choose. If you’re ready to see what you’ll look like with over 100 different eye colors you can head on over to Google Play and pick up Eye Color Studio for free.

8. Pocket.do SMS

Pocket.do SMS is a new Android App that lets you use your phone in your browser where you’ll be able to send & receive SMS’s and even activate the apps Spy-Cam. The app also gives you the ability to find your lost phone and share images with friends and family. If you’d like to give it a shot you can pick it up for free on Google Play.

9. Sky Motion

Sky Motion is a handy little app that lets you know exactly when the rain will start and stop at your exact location. It uses Hyperlocal GPS magic of some sort to accomplish this, and claims to have it down to the minute. I haven’t been able to put it to the test (no rain) here yet, but if you want to try it out you can pick it up for free.

10. Digital Dudz

Digital Dudz is another ‘digital shirt’ apps where you can use the app in coordination with a special shirt to display a virtual image. Digital Dudz throws Halloween into the mix by giving you creepy images to display and while I’m not sure how much the shirts are the app itself is free.
