Verizon Galaxy Nexus added to Google Wallet compatible handsets

by On August 4, 2012

A couple of days ago Google updated their Wallet app to include support for Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Discover cards, where as previously only pre-paid debit cards and Citibank Mastercard were supported. At that time, the list of compatible phones remained the same: Sprint locked Samsung Galaxy S2, Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus, LG Viper 4G LTE, LG Optimus Elite, HTC Evo 4G, as well as the Virgin Mobile Optimus Elite and the GSM/HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus and Wi-Fi Nexus 7 tablet. Google have now added support for the Verizon branded Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Before now, users had found a work around to run the app but, there is no longer any need to do this and you should be able to download Google Wallet directly from the Google Play Store. If however, your Verizon Galaxy Nexus is rooted or runs a custom ROM, the app may still not show on Google Play for you. Currently most successful installation reports are coming from unrooted Galaxy Nexus handsets with the stock ROM installed.

It also appears that there are still some things to iron out in the app. First up, only the Citibank Mastercard shows the merchant’s name on your statements, where as Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express all list the charge as Google Wallet. This isn’t a huge deal but, if like me you like to keep track of where your money has gone exactly, for now you’ll need to keep your own records as to which merchants you’ve paid with Google Wallet. The latest update has also upset American Express, as they didn’t give their blessing to Google to allow their cards to be used and have threatened to block the integration. Bradley Minor a spokesperson for American Express said: “We want to make sure Google’s mobile wallet product meets the standards we set for our Cardmembers in terms of transparency and clarity about transaction detail.” If you’re able to run the app and want to give it a go you can pick it up at the link below…
