I’ve been waiting for this day to come for awhile now, and it’s finally here as YoYo Games has finally released GameMaker Studio to the masses. What’s GameMaker Studio and what does it have to do with Android? If you’re ever dreamed of making your own mobile game (who hasn’t) GameMaker Studio can give you the tools to do just that. The program gives you a full range of tools to bring your game to life whether it’s a card battling game, a sports game or a physics-based flinger. There are quite a few games that have already been put out using an older version of the software like They Need to Be Fed, Froad, and Pollushot just to name a few. There are other all-in-one game makers out there, but none do it as well as GameMaker Studio and none make it as easy. Take it from someone whose brain turns to pudding when he tries to code… its very easy to use. The most exciting part isn’t how easy it is, but how it allows you to actually publish your own games to multiple platforms including iOS, Android, HTML5, and even the store shelves if that’s the route you want to go. Basically it makes your game ready for prime time so you don’t have to deal with outside publishers or middle men.
I’ve been tinkering around with GameMaker Studio since the beta was released, and it’s a very impressive program. Basically anything you can think up, it can do and the team at YoYo games has made making games easy. There have been other versions of GameMaker, but GameMaker Studio is the first version that allows self-publishing for Android & iOS. It’s not the cheapest game making software out there by any means, but it does as advertised and it does it well. The standard “GameMaker Studio” is $99.00, and the export modules for HTML5, Android, and iOS are $199 a piece. Yes it’s expensive (more than I thought it would be), but it’s still cheap compared to Unity Pro and other developer tools.
