A Review of Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots for Android

Overview

Growing up in the 80s there was one toy I always wanted (well several) but never got, and that was the Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robot game. Fast forward 30 years and now I can play with the Red Rocker and Blue Bomber on my phone with OneStepMobile’s Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robots for Android.

Gameplay

If you think this game is just about knocking your opponents block off, you’d be half right as there’s plenty of that, but you also get to train those classic robots in the skills of pugilism. When you crank up the game you have to pick red or blue then you’re given the option to fight or train your robot. In fight mode you have a v-pad, left and right punch buttons and a block button. The buttons all have gauges and the longer you hold the button before releasing it, the stronger your punch will be. There are also a set of gauges up top to show your health and stamina just as is it does in most boxing games. When you pop your opponent enough his head will pop up, and when his red bar is empty (3 head pops) he’s done for that round. There is an option to adjust your setting before the bouts as you can adjust the round count, time and difficulty of your opponents.

Features

Training lets you level up your Strength, Defense, Style, and Stamina. All the training is done through mini-games which are actually a lot of fun. Strength training lets you beat up a metal punching bag while Style has you pressing buttons (to punch) as color coordinated balls come through tubes. Defense puts you on the defensive as you’ll need to dodge a minutes worth of punches, and Stamina lets you jump a little rope that’s being turned by a gear system. Each attribute can be raised 4 levels, and some of the mini-games are pretty damned tough.

Verdict

Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Robot’s turned out to be a nice game that’s definitely worthy of the “Rock ‘em Sock ‘em” moniker. The actual fighting is pretty fun (if a bit easy), and the mini-games are great; I actually enjoyed training my Bot just as much as I did fighting with them. There is no trial version available, but the full version can be had for only $0.99 cents.
