If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the past year, it’s that people love to fling animals at things. Since Angry dropped, there have been quite a few (less than great) games with a similar theme. Blast Monkeys brings something different to the table with a hungry monkey named Moki that really loves bananas. Developer Yobonja released this game last week, and somehow it slipped under my radar. In a short time, it’s already received a 4.5 star rating with over 2,000 reviews and well over 50,000 downloads. Is it truly as great as people are making it out to be? Yup, it’s simple to play, and a whole lot of fun.
The controls are about as easy as you can get. You fire your monkey from a cannon towards the “goal” sign that will take you to the next stage. There are three bananas placed on every level, and you’ll need to try and pick those up before hitting the “goal.” It starts out very easy, and had me thinking “Wow, this is simple.” Then I got to the bubbles, the spinning platforms, and the maze-like levels. It hits just the right level, not being too easy, while just being tough enough. There are 2 worlds, with 25 levels on in each world. You can collect 75 bananas in each world, and use those to unlock additional bonus levels. The second world you unlock by using Monkey Cash, which you can get through tweeting, downloading Zoo Club, or rating the game in the Market. They have a placeholder up for “more levels” and with the early popularity of the game; I think they will have new levels soon.
Blast Monkeys is a welcome addition to an Android Market that is still very crowded with sub-par games. The graphics are easy on the eyes, and the controls are simple; kids and adults will both be able to enjoy this game. The only issue I had was if your phone goes to sleep, the game will close. The dev’s mention the issue in the market description, and I’m sure they’ll have it fixed with the next update. If you’d like to blast a monkey from a cannon, head on over to the market and pick up Blast Monkeys for free.
