When you hear the name Ninja Kiwi balloons probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind. That’s all you’ll think about after playing one of their popular Bloons games, and their latest release is going to whittle away at your free time. Bloons TD Battles is the name of the game, and it’s one of the best mobile multiplayer games you’re likely to play.
If you’ve played any of the other Bloons games, you’ll have no problem getting down to business in Bloons TD Battles – if you’re unfamiliar with the series, here’s the skinny. Bloons TD Battles is a tower defense game that substitutes monkeys for the towers and balloons for the enemies. The gameplay is that of your typical TD game, but the twist with Bloons TD Battles is that it all takes place online. Yup, you get to battle against Facebook friends or random opponents till your heart’s content… or until you run out of energy.
Bloons TD Battles gives gamers two modes of play and two different types of matches. You can duke it out in Quick Play matches or in a Private Match via Facebook. I’ve had the occasional disconnect, but overall the waiting time between matches is nil. Once you decide on a match you can go with Assault Mode or Defensive Mode. Assault Mode pits you against an opponent to see who can last the longest against a barrage of balloons… the twist is that you’re able to buy and send balloons at your opponent in addition to the ones already headed their way. It’s a balancing act of sorts as you have to watch how much you spend on upgrades vs. sending balloons towards your foe.
Defensive Mode has you both hunkering down to see who will have the last monkey standing. You can’t send balloons, but you’ll have some long matches if you have a skilled opponent. As for your simian army, you’ll see all the familiar faces including the Monkey Apprentice, Boomerang Thrower, Monkey Buccaneer, and the uber-expensive Super Monkey. Any dough you earn from playing can be used to unlock the next tier of your towers or you can buy balloon decorations to spice things up a bit. The usual in-app purchases are present, but not necessary to beat an opponent to a pulp.
I’ve played and covered a lot of the Bloons TD games that have hit Google Play, and Bloons TD Battles is the best of the bunch thus far. The games not perfect, as your options for picking an opponent are limited and you may get hit with the occasional force close, but it’s a blast to play and there’s tons of replay value. If you want to give it a whirl, you can pick up Ninja Kiwi’s Bloons TD Battles for free on Google Play.
