Game Review: Ndemic Studios Plague Inc for Android
We’ve been hit with a few Infection games lately, and Plague Inc. is the latest game to let you dominate the world with a virus of sorts. It infected me with a healthy dose of fun last week, and as promised I’m back with a full review of Ndemic Creations Plague Inc.
Plague Inc is a game that’s all about getting people sick, and to do that you’ll have to pick a plague. You’ll start out with a lowly Bacteria, but as the game progresses you’ll unlock all sorts of deadly things like Fungus, Nano-Viruses, and the scary little buggers known as Prions. Once you’ve picked your plague and named it you’re taken to the genetic code screen which lets you customize your plague by modifying it’s genetic code. Don’t worry though a degree isn’t necessary to alter your virus as once you’ve unlocked the genes it’s as simple as popping one into place.
When your super virus is complete it’s time to dominate which means you get to pick your starting country from the world map. There are a lot of countries in the game and some countries are much harder to take over than others. I would highly recommend starting out with a poor country before moving on to more modern nations like the US, Russia, or England. As your disease spreads you’ll get DNA points which you’ll use to further strengthen and spread your plague. From the disease tab you can change the way your plague spreads (air, land, food) and it’s abilities like drug resistance, and genetic reshuffling.
Last, but certainly not least is the Symptoms tab which is where you’ll make your plague deadly. You’ll add symptoms that range from rashes and insomnia to things a little more deadly like total organ failure and necrosis. Basically transmission increases the infectivity while symptoms increase the severity. The more severe or lethal your virus is the quicker it’ll get noticed by scientists who will try to cure it. There’s quite a bit of depth in Plague Inc as there are around 80-90 unlockable elements in the game counting the genes you can add when starting out.
As mentioned the cure is what you’re going to want to watch out for as the more deadly your disease is the harder they’re going to try and beat it. You have to walk a fine line between infecting people and keeping it under the radar while squashing any cure attempts that come up. The news ticker will give you some information on what countries are doing to beat you, but you can also use some upgrades like genetic reshuffling to slow research down.
Plague Inc. is an interesting game and it’s the most fun you can have spreading a virus without dying or going to prison. I was a little concerned about the replay factor at first, but those concerns quickly vanished after I beat the game on easy and unlocked new things for my virus. Plague Inc. is actually setup to keep you coming back for more as it gets very difficult to beat back the cure depending on what type of virus you’re using and the difficulty level. I’ve really got nothing bad to say about the game as its pretty damned engrossing once you get into it and it’s free (with IAP’s) which is never a bad thing. If you’re in the mood to spread a plague you can pick up Ndemic Creations Plague Inc. for free on Google Play.
