Return Zero is a new 3D retro racing game from developers “We Came from Mars.” I’m generally not a fan of racing games, but this little beauty is an exception. I saw the name in the Market and thought, “That sounds cool.” When I saw the word “Tron” in the description, along with the Retro graphics and I was sold. After spending some quality time with this tunnel racer, here’s what I found…
The gameplay is pretty straightforward. You’re piloting a “light-racer,” and you have to zip through tunnels, while avoiding obstacles set in your way. You can move up or down by “shaking” the phone forward or using the control pad. The same also goes for left and right, and there is a button for the brakes. There are different “gates” that you want to pass through; blue, yellow, and red. The blue’s are good and speed you up. The red will slow you down, while the yellow stops you temporarily. I used the control pad for up/down, as shaking it forward didn’t work to well for me.
The graphics are slick, and have a cool retro feel. They will definitely remind you of Tron. I’m sure that’s what the Devs had in mind, and it works well. I also enjoyed the music. I have always been one to mute the sound if the music’s bad, but I didn’t have to do that with this one. The options are pretty slim; you can adjust the sound, sensitivity and turn on vibration. In the free version, you get 3 worlds with 12 levels. It also has the popular Openfeint for those who use the service. The “paid” version gets you 5 worlds & 20 levels, while remaining completely ad-free. To be honest, I did really notice any ad’s in the free version.
It’s a welcome addition to the Android Market, and a fun game that will keep you busy for a while. The only complaints I have are the up/down “shake” thing, and the music. I loved the music and haven’t finished the game, but it would be cool to have a few more tracks available. Those are honestly minor gripes; the game was great fun. If Return Zero sounds like a game you’d like to try, you can grab it in the Android Market.
