The exhibition of the Montreal Fine Arts Museum, on which this application is based entitled Peru: Kingdoms of the Sun and Moon contains over 300 artworks and artifacts from private and public collections from Peru, Europe and North America. This is the first time an exhibition of this magnitude has been put together in North America. Nearly 4000 years of history are reflected in the works that you’re about to see.The numerous pre-Colombian masterpieces presented here will help you understand how the myths and legends from the distant past provided the foundation of Peru’s collective identity. Likewise, works from colonial period will reveal how European art and ideas became seminal in the ongoing construction of this identity. Paradoxically, while the Spanish attempted to suppress indigenous rituals and traditions, they also used them to propagate their Catholic teachings. Finally, this application showcases modern works from the first half of the 20th century, many of which are being shown in North America for the first time. Through them, you’ll witness how early 20th-century artists re-evaluated indigenous heritage, reinterpreted it and reaffirmed its contribution to the Peruvian national identity, which was and has remained a source of pride for all the citizens of Peru.
