How Accurate Was The Future Depicted In Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare

Call Of Duty Advanced Warfare was released close to the end of 2014 and received praise from reviewers and critics alike. The game was set in the future close to 2050 and offered newer revolutionary technology and weaponry in the hands of players. The story was about a private security company known as Atlas that had ulterior motives. It was simple yet interesting enough to entice players to finish it.

The marketing for the game revolved around what the future would hold for next-generation weaponry and machinery which had gotten many people excited. The developers even mentioned many times the research they were conducting to make sure the portrayal of the future here is as accurate as can be. The game received generally favorable reviews and while it was hard to assess exactly how accurate the research proved to be back then, 7 years after the release seems like an acceptable time to compare how technology is advancing and whether it is the direction that Advanced Warfare portrayed.

The Weapons

The weapons in Advanced Warfare were for the most part nothing out of the ordinary. They behaved and fired like normal guns with a believable amount of recoil. While most of the weaponry was acceptable and normal, two guns, in particular, fired energy ammunition.

Both of these weapons would fire an infinite amount of ammunition which was either plasma or lasers. Although, these weapons would overheat and need to charge. There was also a mounted rail gun on a vessel in the game. This could fire very fast due to electromagnetic forces at play.

In reality, most of the weapons used in Advanced Warfare were believable. Yet, the two that implemented plasma and lasers were not. There is no such way yet to harness unlimited energy to use on something as small as weapons and doing so would only allow a finite amount of ammunition. This means that all but two of the weapons used in Advanced Warfare are accurate so far. The railgun on the other hand is close to being a reality for many militaries around the world. Similar working railguns are being produced or in the testing stages around the world. This tells us Advanced Warfare was somewhat accurate in this aspect.

The Vehicles

The vehicles driven around cities and by civilians look similar to the ones driven today and didn’t display many drastic changes. The only notable change would be that an emphasis was put on some vehicles having hovering capabilities and highways that supported only these vehicles. Military wise the game included a moving spider tank that had a cannon mounted on top of it, the spider-like legs were to make terrain traversal easier. A hoverbike was also included that flew over the ground and reached high speeds. Finally, aerial vehicles that flew via rotors built in their wings were also used.

Pedestrian vehicles were largely authentic and didn’t change much from vehicles used in the present. However, hovering capabilities are not yet invented, and instead, the emphasis is put on electric vehicles and self-driving ones. The spider tank shown in the game looked like it would be a ways off or unrealistic, however, similar-looking drilling machines are in production even now but not useful for military use as of yet. The hoverbike shown was somewhat inaccurate in today’s world and isn’t commercialized through experimentation has been done. The aerial vehicle displayed would be the most accurate out of all the vehicles because very similar ones are being used by militaries even now known as Ospreys.

Military Technology

Apart from weapons and vehicles, the highlight of the game was the next generational technology shown.

Augmented Reality Display

A noticeable feature of the game was that many of the elements on your screens such as your weapon ammunition or objective markers were displayed directly through your helmet goggles. This is mostly accurate in today’s world in the sense that airforce pilots have information like this displayed in their helmets. Google Glass is also a prime example of this system.

Exosuit

The biggest gameplay change in this game was the ability to jump and boost in all directions via an exosuit that all soldiers wear. Super strength and cloaking is also a feature that these suits include. In the present, research is being conducted on suits like this however the processing power needed to achieve the agility and strength used in the game is a ways off.

Mechs

The game also had giant walking battle suits that soldiers could get in to control a minigun mounted on one arm. Many suits like this have been announced and may be in the testing phase. Cloaking

In many areas of the game, cloaking has been implemented by soldiers and vehicles. Completely cloaked equipment is not yet possible although the world is very close to figuring it out and cloaking could become a reality.

Conclusion

Call of duty Advanced Warfare did many things right and one of the reasons it was scored high was because of its portrayal of the future. While many of those things are still far off and some even going the opposite directions, there are a few that are being implemented even today. The accuracy of it is a plus point for us.
